lecture 14 Flashcards
this arises from the front of the external carotid artery just below the level of the greater horn of the hyoid, it descend obliquely downward, dividing into terminal branches at the apex of the thyroid lobe
Superior thyroid artery.
it is the chief artery to the tongue and buccal floor of the mouth arises anteromedially from the external carotid at a level of the tip of the hyoid’s greater horn, between the superior thyroid and facial arteries
Lingual artery
arises anteriorly from the external carotid in the carotid triangle above the lingual artery or in common trunk with it and immediately above the greater horn of the hyoid bone.
Facial artery
This, the smallest branch of the external carotid, is a long, slender vessel, arising from the deep aspect of the external carotid’s origin and ascending between the internal carotid artery and pharynx to the cranial base
Ascending pharyngeal artery
This is the larger terminal branch of the external carotid, arises behind the mandibular neck, at first embedded in the parotid gland
Maxillary artery.
This is the smaller terminal branch of the external carotid, begins in the parotid gland behind the mandible’s neck, crosses the posterior root of the zygomatic process of the temporal bone and about 5 cm above this divides into anterior and posterior branches.
Superficial temporal artery.
This small vessel branches posteriorly from the external carotid just above the digastric and stylohyoid
It ascends between the parotid gland and the styloid process to the groove between the auricular cartilage and mastoid process, dividing into auricular and occipital branches
Posterior auricular artery
This artery arises posteriorly from the external carotid, about 2 cm from its origin; at first medial to the posterior belly of the digastric, it ends posteriorly in the scalp.
Occipital artery.
arising near the origin of the occipital but sometimes directly from the external carotid, to supply this muscle.
Sometimes the sternocleidomastoid artery.
