A

Competitive fervor decreases – can only win so
many trophies
Numbers of athletes dwindle and competition
becomes lower
Social support – not as supported as we get older
Competing in athletics is not the most important
part of life anymore (you have a more broad
perspective of what is important)

A

Ida Mintz – “galloping great grandmother” began
running at 70, marathons at age 73, ran last one at 85
years and died at 86 (Chicago Tribune, Oct 16, 1991 – Obituaries)
Johnny Kelley – ran his last full Boston Marathon in
1992 at age 84 (‘93 and ‘94 would run last 7 miles to
wave to fans!)
Won in 1935 and 1945 and had 18 top 10 finishes
Died at 97

A

Pre-frail older adults: 2-3 times a week, 45-60 min – RT and
balance emphasized
Frail – 3 times a week, 30-45 minutes, 3-4 perceived
exertion, aerobic emphasis
Intensity – must provide overload
