Lecture 12: Technostress Flashcards
Technostress
Stress caused by an inability to adapt or cope with new computer technologies in a healthy manner
5 techno stressors
1) Techno overload
2) Techno invasion
3) Techno complexity
4) Techno insecurity
5) Techno uncertainty
Techno overload
Technology forces users to work faster and longer
Techno invasion
Due to technology, employees can be reached anytime and feel the need to be constantly connected (smartphone)
Techno complexity
Complexity associated with technologies leads users to feel inadequate in their computer skills
Techno insecurity
Technology makes users feel threatened about losing their jobs
Techno uncertainty
Continuing technological changes unsettling users and create uncertainty
Outcomes of technostress
- Stress complaints, worse job attitudes
- Higher level of emotional exhaustion and anxiety
- Lower levels of job satisfaction and organizational commitment
- Decreasing task performance, productivity and intention to use ICT
Techno-inhibitors (reduce technostress)
- Technology-related: Make technology user-friendly and support help desks to ask questions
- Non-technology-related: Technology self-efficacy, effective change management and segmentation culture (better work-life balance)
Conceptual model of technostress
- Technostressors create strain –> this relation is influenced by technostress inhibitors (no moderation effect in study by Ragu-Nathan et al. (2008)
- Strain/stress over time will effect organizational outcomes
Hinderance stressors
Appraised as threats that hinder personal development
Challenge stressors
Appraised as opportunities that promote personal growth
Work-home spillover
An intraindividual contagion process that occurs when salient experiences at work affect emotions, attitudes or behaviors within the same individual at home –> can be positive or negative
Work-home role integration
Blending work and home life
