The dilemma of teams
We can be much more successful in team than working alone but:
We have to give up our independence
We have to put p with free riders
Teams are sometimes dysfunctional
What makes teams effective
Effectiveness is based on three outcomes
Satisfaction
Production output
Capacity to adapt and learn

Conflict can be for the good: because you refine ideas and get news ideas
Needs to be managed well and can’t get personal
Healthy conflict means development of team
Creates accountability
Formal teams
Created by the organisation
As a part of the formal organisational structure
Vertical team
Manager and their employees.
Horizontal team
Generally same-level employees with different areas of expertise.
May be disbanded after the task is completed.
Self-directed teams
Problem solving team
Five to 12 employees from the same department.
Improve quality, efficiency, and work environment.
Self managed team (shared leadership)
Five to 20 multi skilled workers
Produce an entire or part of product/service
Often the team leader role rotates
Take responsibility for decisions, resource use, monitor performance
Team characteristics
How do I build the right team?
Three points to consider…
Size - small is best (5-7 members ). as team increases so does free riders.
Diversity - source of creativity. healthy arguments.
Member roles - task-focused.
