How do MAOI’s work?
Inhibiting monoamine oxidase which breaks down serotonin in the synapse, therefore leaving more serotonin available
How do SSRI’s work?
Inhibit serotonin reuptake - leaving more serotonin available in the synapse
How do anxiolytics work? (e.g. valium, xanax)
Increase transmission of GABA neurotransmitter at synpases
How do beta-blockers work?
Control autonomic arousal
How do benzodiazepines work?
Reduce the uncomfortable feelings associated with anxiety
What is a non-invasive and effective non-pharmacological treatment for depression?
rTMS - little side effects, not invasive
