Lecture 11: The Prokaryotes: Domains Bacteria & Archaea Flashcards
What are proteobacteria?
Gram-negative, chemehetertrophic bacteria that possess a specific rRNA sequence
What are the 5 classes of proteobacteria?
- Alphaproteobacteria
- betaproteobacteria
- gammaproteobacteria
- deltaproteobacteria
5.epsilonproteobacteria
What are common characteristics of alphaproteobacteria?
- grow w/ very low levels nutrients
- some have stalks or buds called prosthecae
- include agriculturally important bacteria
What is the difference between Pelagibacter, Ehrlichia, Rhizobium, Bartonella, and Brucella?
Pelagibacter: one of most abundant microorganisms
Ehrlichia: transmitted by ticks; infection in canines
Rhizobium: fix nitrogren in roots
bartonella: cat scratch disease
Brucella: obligate parasite of mammals
What is notable about betaproteobacteria?
play a role in nitrogen fixation
What are the differences between burkholderia, bordetella, neisseria?
burkholderia: b. pseudomallei-causes meliodosis in humans
bordetella: B.pertussis- causes whooping cough
neisseria: N.gonnorheae & N.meningitis (explanatory)
What is notable about gammaproteobacteria?
generally have different shapes, include free living bacteria
What is the difference between francisella, Pseudomonadales, Legionella, V. Cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, Enterobacteriales, E.coli, and Salmonella?
francisella: F. tularensis- causes tularemia
Pseudomonadales: pseudomonas - opportunistic pathogens
Legionella: causes pneumonia
V. cholera: causes cholera
V. parahaemolyticus: causes gastroenteritis
Enterobacteriales: enterics; inhabit intestinal tract; cause uti
E.coli: indicator of fecal contamination
salmonella: 2,500 serovars
What is the difference between shigella, klebsiella, serratia, yersinia, and haemophilus?
shigella: causes baccilary dysentery
klebsiella: K. pneumoniae causes pneumonia
serratia: produces red pigment; cause of nosocomial infections
yersinia: y. pestis causes plague
haemophilus: H. influenza causes meningitis (does NOT cause influenza)
What is unique about Deltaproteobacteria?
include bacteria that are predators on other gram-neg bacteria
important to sulfer cycle
What is the differences between Bdellvibrio, Desulfovibrio, & Myxococcals?
Bdell: attack other gram-neg bacteria
Desu: found in anaerobic tract
Myxococcals: form fruiting body containing myxospores
What are the differences between these epsilonproteobacteria: campylobacter & helicobacter?
Campy: common bacterial cause of diarrheal illness
Helico: causes stomach cancer (H. pylori)
