Lecture 11 Flashcards
What is an actor?
animal that initiates the behaviour
What is a recipient?
animal that receives/is subject of the behaviour
What are four sampling methods?
Ad lib sampling
focal sampling
scan sampling
behaviour sampling
What are some recording rules?
continuous record
time sampling
- instantaneous sampling
- one-zero sampling
What is continuous recording?
Continuous observation/recording for a specific amoutn of time, can get true frequencies, latencies durations etc.
What is time sample (interval structured recording)?
At pre-determined intervals
- also called point sampling
- score: proportion of all sample points on which behaviour happened
What is the difference between instantaneous sampling and one-zero sampling?
under the umbrella of interval structured recording
Instantaneous: record occurrences at the beginning of an interval
score - the proportion of all sample points on which behaviour happened
One-zero: records the first occurrence within an interval
- did the behaviour occur, yes = one, no=zero
score - the proportion of all sample points on which behaviour happened
What is ad libitum sampling?
freely, as much as you desire, without restriction
What is focal sampling?
continuously following one specific individuals, often used for time budgets and social interactions
What is scan sampling?
group of animals is scanned at the same time, often used for time budgets, synchrony
What is behaviour sampling?
specific behaviours of interest are recorded, usually events
