Lecture 1 vocab Flashcards
What is apart of the organ system?
brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves
What is apart of the neural system?
brain and eyes
What is a part of the brain region?
visual cortex
neuroscience subfields focus on questions spanning one or more level of analysis what are these levels?
molecular, cellular, systems, behavioral, cognitive neuroscience
What diseases can occur at ion channel levels?
Epilepsy, caused by mutation voltage gated channels
What diseases can occur at nerve fiber levels?
Multiple sclerosis, caused by demyelination
What diseases can occur at organ system levels?
paralysis, caused by damage to spinal cord
what diseases can occur at Social interaction levels
Autism caused by unknown
What does the central nervous system(CNS) consist of?
The brain and spinal cord
What does the Peripheral nervous system(PNS) consist of?
Nerves themselves that connect the central nervous system to the arms legs and organs
what is the spinal cord encased by?
the vertebrae
What are the two major divisions of the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord
What are the two major divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
Somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
what is the somatic nervous system?
The somatic nervous system is voluntary part of the peripheral nervous system consisting of motor neurons and sensory neurons(skin, muscle, eyes, etc)
what three divisions does the autonomic nervous system consist of?
sympathetic nervous system(Activate or flight response), parasympathetic nervous system(activates relaxed non-dangerous systems), and enteric nervous system(In the gut and regulated digestion)
what is homeostasis?
It’s a dynamic balance between autonomic branches
What percent of our body weight is our brain?
2%
what percentage of our oxygen does the brain consume?
25%
what percentage of our Glucose does the brain consume?
70%
What is the cerebral cortex?
the outermost layer of grey matter making up the cerebrum
who was Franz Josef Gall?
He proposed that specific brain regions controlled specific cognitive functions/qualities(founder of phrenology)
What did Paul Broca do?
He illustrated that different brain regions have specific functions
What did Wilder Penfield do?
he simulated brain regions with small amounts of electricity during neurosurgery and cured a woman’s seizures
What are the four regions of the brain?
Frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe
