Lecture 1: Terminology and Orientation Flashcards
What are the three aspects of anatomy and what are they called?
Embryology; Study of developmental and growth anatomy
Histology; Study of cells and tissues at the microscopic level and their processes and interactions.
Gross anatomy; Study of macroscopic structures.
What is the human body hierarchy?
Chemicals → Cells → Tissues → Organs → Systems → Human Body
Identify and describe the 3 planes that dissect the universal anatomical figure.
→ Coronal (seperates anterior/posterior)
→ Midsagittal (seperates the body into equal left and right halves)
→ Transverse (Seperates superior/inferior)
Examine the body regions of the head and upper/lower limbs
Head = Cranium/ Cephalis
Upper limb = Arm (Brachial) → Forearm (antebrachial)
Lower Limb = Thigh (femoral) → Leg (cural)
What are the directional terms that seperate the front and back of the body.
Anterior and Posterior
What are the directional terms that seperate the upper and lower part of the body.
Superior and Inferior
What are the directional terms that seperate the body from the midsagittal plane?
Medial and Lateral
What are the directional terms utilized relative to the limbs?
Proximal and Distal
What directional terms describe the action “towards belly side and towards spine side”
Ventral and Dorsal
Directional term towards the head:
Cranial
Directional terms “towards the nose” and “towards the tail” respectively.
Rostral and Caudal
What is the directional terms for “towards the surface of skin” “away from surface of skin”
Superficial and Deep
What is the thoracic cavity composed of?
- Mediastinum (space between lungs and space)
- Pericardium (heart)
- Pleura (lungs)
What is the abdominopelvic cavity composed of ?
Abdomen and the pelvis
Explain two subdivision methods for the abdominopelvic cavity
