Lecture 1 Flashcards
Name 2 neural tube defects
Spina bifida and anencephaly
What prevents most neural tube defects?
Folic acid
Name examples of foods that include folic acid
Cereals, bread
Name all primary vesicles
Prosencephalon, mesencephalon, rhombencephalon
Name all secondary vesicles
Telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon, metencephalon, myencephalon
DAVE
Dorsal is Afferent, Ventral is Efferent
Name one reflex response that doesn’t need interneurons
Tendon-jerk reflex
What are the meningeal layers from the outer layer to the inner layer?
Endosteal dura mater, dura sinus, meningeal dura mater, (subdural space), arachnoid, (subarachnoid space), pia mater
What flows through the central canal, brain ventricles and subarachnoid space?
Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF)
What are formed by the choroid plexus and absorbed by the arachnoid granulations?
Lateral and fourth ventricles, ventral surface of brain
How can the CSF be sampled?
Lumbar puncture
Where is the needle inserted during a lumbar puncture
L3-L4
Why is the needle inserted in L3-L4 during a lumbar puncture?
It is less likely to hit an important place which causes damage.
What are disorders of CSF flow?
Hydrocephalus, increase in intracranial pressure, Coning
What is a semipermeable membrane which separates the blood from the CSF?
Blood-brain barrier (BBB)
