Lecture 1 Flashcards
Intro seminar
What does CNS consist of and is control voluntary or involuntary
brain and spinal cord - both voluntary and involuntary
what is the Peripheral Nervous system and its 2 components
PNS connects CNS to limbs and organs: divided into ANS and SNS
Autonomic nervous system control
involuntary ( parasympathetic,sympathetic and enteric)
Somatic nervous system control
Voluntary
What is the blood brain barrier
gatekeeper to the CNS, preventing entry of 98% of drugs to the brain following IV infusion
what molecules can cross the BBB
lipid solible molecules less than 400Da
what do endocrine glands do
secrete hormones into the bloodstream
Describe the endocrine system in terms of hormones and the processes they control
releases peptide, steroid and amine.
conrolls grown, reproduction, energy metabolism, hoomeostasis
how do water soluble hormones exit the cell
inside vessicles
define homeostasis
ability of body or cell to maintain its internal environment when dealing with external changes
endocrine system and homeostasis
control of blood glucose
what do adrenal and thyroid glands control
metabolic rate
the nervous system is a (wired/wireless) system? and how does this effect the response?
wired- meaning there is specific structural arrangement between neurons, so neurotransmitters are released and diffuse across a short distance.
endocrine system is a (wired/wireless) system? and how does this effect the response
wireless- meaning theres no structural connection between the releasing cell and the target cell, so hormones are released and carried long distances in the blood stream.
