3 stages of foetal development
Blastocyst formation - 0-16 days after
Organogenesis (cell division,migration,differentiation and death)- 17-60 days after
Histogenesis and functional maturation - 61-full term
What happens in each trimester
1st- increased bv,uterine and breast size
2nd- deposition of fat stores
3rd - foetal and placental growth
Physiological changes in pregnancy
Increased HR decreased BP
decreased acid secretion and gastric emptying
Decreased bladder capacity and urinary control
What does the quantity of drug reaching foetus depend on
Physio chemical characteristics and maternal pharmacokinetic parameters
Common issues in pregnancy
Nausea and vomiting
Harmorrhouds
Indigestion
UTI/thrush
Anaemia
Infections
Hypertension
Gestational diabetes
VTE
obstetric cholestasis
Hormone which is increased in pregnancy causing sickness
Hcg
Teratogenic drugs
Cause malformations in child
Eg anticoagulants, alcohol, chemo, retinoids, anticonvulsants
Breastfeeding when on medication
Feed just before taking medication as lipid soluble drugs will be high in conc due to fat content of milk
Indigestion in pregnancy
3rd trimester
Thrush in pregnancy
Best to refer to gp to prescribe oral treatment
UTI in pregnancy
Refer to GP
