Lecture 1 Flashcards
Spontaneous generation
Formation of a living organism without the decent from a similar organism. Randomly appears. (Beer rags and mouse appear)
Pasteurization
Heating an object so it doesn’t form bacteria from the outside environment. This disproves spontaneous generation.
Endospore
Dense protein that can survive when boiled
Coat (Spore Coat)
Ring around the cortex that is dry so it causes the endospore not to be damaged by heat. Combination of spore specific proteins.
Cortex
It is the spongy part of the endospore. It soaks up the water and keeps the spore dry.
Core (Core Wall)
Contains the cell wall of the endospore and is very resistant.
Prokarya
Singled cell organism that doesn’t have a bound nucleus.
Bacteria
A large domain or kingdom. 90% of cells in the body. Prokaryote
Peptidoglycan
Forms the cell wall of bacteria
Archaea
Prokaryote. Has many extreme lifestyles. It is a kingdom or domain
Eukarya
Multi-cell organism. Contains a cell wall and membrane bound organisms.
Membrane-bound organelle
Organelles are not free in the cell
Algae
Uses chloroplast for photosynthesis, can have cilia
Fungi
Has 2 life forms: yeast and mold
Protozoa
Uses endocytosis for feeding, can have cilia
