Lec 6 Flashcards
Environmental stressor
Factors that constrain productivity, reproductive success, and ecological development
Disturbance
Episodic but intense influence that causes sever damage
Pollution
Exposure to chemicals or energy at an intensity that exceeds the tolerance of organisms
Contamination
Potentially damaging stressors are present in the environment, but the intensity is too low to cause damage
Two types of pollution
Natural
Anthropogenic- human created
Different types of pollution
Chemical pollution
Thermal pollution
Biological pollution
Noise pollution
Light pollution
Aesthetic pollution
Chemical pollution
When a substance is in a amount that causes negative physiological responses in other organisms
Examples of chemical pollution
Smog
Combustion
Thermal pollution
Heat release that causes ecological stress, due to variation of species tolerance
Example of thermal pollution
Nuclear plant pollution
Biological pollution
When humans release organisms beyond their natural range
Non-native species
Pathogens
Noise pollution
When the level of ambient sound becomes distracting to the normal activities of humans or are detrimental to wildlife
Light pollution
When artificial light levels are detrimental to wildlife
Often occurs when excess light is bright enough to obscure stars in the night sky
Aesthetic pollution
Visual images that are displeasing to most
Culture-based
Only impacts humans, but we are a part of the environment
Noise pollution example
Mammals are less sensitive than birds
Reptiles are less sensitive than birds
Amphibians have the largest sensitivity range
