Commendation
Observation of behavior across time/patterns of behavior.
Compliment
Observation of a one-time occurence.
Calgary Family Intervention Model (CFIM)
Builds on a strengths and resiliency perspective by assisting in determining the domain of family functioning that predominantly needs changing. Has three domains cognitive, behavioural, and affective.
“Fit”
Involves recognizing reciprocity between the nurse’s ideas and opinions and the family’s illness experience. Finding an intervention that works collaboratively with the family and nurse.
Linear Questions
Are investigative and explore a family member’s descriptions or perceptions of a problem. Used to gather information about families’ problems. It is meant to inform the nurse and intended to correct behaviour.
Circular Questions
Gives an understanding of problems and is aimed to reveal explanations of problems. Meant to facilitate behavioural change.
Family Functioning
Generally considered the family’s ability to meet the needs of its members. This is about family functioning domains, questioning techniques, and nursing actions and interventions.
Difference Question
Explores differences between people, relationships, time, ideas, or beliefs.
Behavioural-Effect Question
Explores the effect of one family member’s behaviour on another.
Hypothetical/Future Question
Explores family options and alternative actions or meanings in the future.
Illness Narrative
The story of a patient’s own unique experience of their illness.
Interventive Questions
Intended to effect change in any/all of the three domains of family functioning. Simple but most powerful intervention.
Triadic Questions
Questions posed to a third person about the relationship between two other people.
