Family Nursing
The process of providing for the healthcare needs of families that are within the scope of nursing practice. This nursing care can be aimed towards the family as context, the family as whole, the family as a system, or the family as a component of society.
Rational Practice
An understanding of patient’s healthcare needs within complex context, in which patient experience healthcare and nurses deliver nursing care.
Family Health
Health is a dynamic changing state of well-being. It includes biological, spiritual, sociological, and cultural factors, and affects individual members and whole family systems. There are various definitions but it is often related to family structure and functioning, and family physical and mental wellness.
Family as Context
Nursing care focuses on the individual as client, family as context of the individual. Family may be a stressor or a resource; is also called family-centred care.
Family as a Client/Patient
Members assessed separately, NP practice, community care.
Family Systems Nursing
Family is the client, viewed as an interactional system, reciprocity, impact.
Family Groups in Society
Families are a subsystem or larger systems in the community, society, common issues, and trends.
Health Educator
Teaching families formally or informally about health and illness and acting as the main provider of health information.
Care provider and Supervisor
Providing direct care and supervising care given by others, including family members and nursing assistants.
Family Advocate
Working with support families and speaking up on issues such as safety and access to services.
Case Finder and Epidemiologist
Tracking disease and playing a key role in disease surveillance and control.
Researcher
Identifying practice problems and seeking answers and solutions through scientific investigation alone or in collaboration.
Manager and Coordinator
Managing, collaborating, and liaising with family members, health and social services, and others to improve access to care.
Counselor
Playing a therapeutic role in helping to cope with problems and to identify resources.
Consultant
Serving as consultant to families and agencies to identify and facilitate access to resources.
Environmental Modifier
Working to modify, for example, the home environment so that the disable can improve mobility and engage in self-care.
Family
A term used to refer to individuals who are related (biologically, emotionally, or legally) to and/or have close bonds (friendships, commitments, shared households and child rearing responsibilities, and romantic attachments) with the person receiving healthcare. A person’s family includes all those whom the person identifies as significant in their life (parents, caregivers, friends, substitute decision makers, groups, communities, and populations).
Lip Service
An avowal of advocacy, adherence, or allegiance expressed in words but not backed by deeds- usually used with pay.
Patient-and-Family-Centred Care
An approach to care that recognizes the importance of family and in a patient’s life and the importance of their active involvement in planning and making decisions on healthcare, services and treatment, and health system reform. This approach to care provides respectful, compassionate, culturally safe, and responsive care that meets the needs, values, beliefs, and preferences of the patient, their family, and others identified as significant to their life from diverse backgrounds and settings.
Person-Centered-Care Attitudes
Reflects the healthcare provider’s belief in the importance of coming to know the whole person (biophsychosochial and spiritual) when assessing the person’s condition. They also include a belief in the person’s ability to make a decision; the healthcare provider therefore promotes autonomy and sharing of power.
Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM)
An integrated, multidimensional framework based on the foundations of systems, cybernetics, communication, and change theory and is influenced by postmodernism and biology of cognition.

Reveal the family strucutre.
Ecomap
Reveal connections outside the family.
Index Person
Person with health concerns.
