LEC 3: Cardiovascular Disease Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three types of cardiovascular disease?
A
- Atherosclerosis
- Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
- Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS)
2
Q
What is the most common cause for cardiovascular disease?
A
Coronary atherosclerosis
3
Q
Coronary Atherosclerosis
A
A buildup of plaque inside the artery walls. This buildup causes the inside of the arteries to become narrower and slows down the flow of blood.
4
Q
What is the etoilogy and pathophysiology for cardiovascular disease ?
A
- Characterized by fat and lipid deposits in the inner lining or artery that obstruct circulation
- When vessel walls damaged, platelets activated and aggregate
- Thrombin generated, fibrin formed
- Results in occlusion, reduced blood flow, MI, or death
5
Q
What are the three stages of development for atherosclerosis?
A
- Fatty streak
- Raised fibrous plaque
- Complicated lesion
6
Q
Stages of Development: Fatty Streak
A
Lipid filled smooth muscle cells migrate to injured vessel area
7
Q
Stages of Development: Raised Fibrous Plaque
A
- More lipid and smooth muscle adheres to damaged wall
- Lesion build up
8
Q
Stages of Development: Complicated Lesion
A
- Platelets accumulate; thrombus formation
- Most dangerous
- Thrombus grows
- Continued narrowing or occlusion
