LEC 1: Definitions Flashcards
Nosocomial Infection
Hospital acquired infection (HAIS) that ate caused by viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens
Asepsis
Absence of pathogenic disease producing microorganisms
Medical Asepsis
Reduce and precent the spread of microorganisms
- Clean technique
Surgical Asepsis
Procedures to eliminate all microorganisms
- Sterile technique
Wound
A disruption of the integrity and function of tissues in the body
Acute Wound
A wound that proceeds through an orderly and timely reparative process that results in sustained restoration of anatomical and functional integrity
Chronic Wound
A wound that fails to proceed through an orderly and timely process to produce anatomical and functional integrity
Abrasion
A superficial wound with little bleeding and is considered a partial-thickness wound
Puncture Wound
Usually a small, circular wound with the edges coming together towards the center
Epidermis
The superficial, thinner layer of skin, composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Dermis
A layer of dense irregular connective tissue laying deep in the epidermis.
Pressure Ulcer
A localized injury to the skin and underlying tissue, usually over a bony prominence, as a result of pressure, or in combination with shear and/or friction
Epithelialization
Healing by the growth of epithelium over a denuded surface. The formation of granulation tissue into an open wound allows the re-epithelialization phase to take place, as epithelial cells migrate across the new tissue to form a barrier between the wound and the environment.
General Anesthesia
Loss of all sensation, reflexes, and consciousness
Regional Anesthesia
Loss of sensation to a large area of the body
