learning and memory Flashcards
learning definition
a relatively permanent change in the reaction to a situation” / “long lasting change in behaviour as a result of previous experience
memory definition
the mental process fo acquring and retaining information for later retrieval” / “the process by which we code, store and retrieve information about our experiences
what are reflex behaviours?
responses to stimuli that are involuntary or free from conscious control
what is habituation?
the diminishing of an innate response to a frequently repeated stimulus
eg a rats reflex (innate) behaviour decreases after repeated exposure of the stimulus
what is dishabituation?
an increase in responding to a habituated stimulus after an interpolated deviant
habituation implications for therapy
- exposure therapy; likely to see a big reduction in the anxiety response
treatment needs to be over an extended period of time to result in long term habituation
