Learning Flashcards
What is the principle of operant conditioning
Reinforcement is contingent on the organisms responding
What are primary reinforcers
satisfy basic needs like food water and sex
What are secondary reinforcers
allow us to get to primary reinforcers
What is a fixed schedule?
reiforcemnet occurs at predictable times
What is a variable shedule?
Reinforcement occurs at irregular times
What is a ratio schedule?
Occurs after a certain number of appropriate responses
What is the reiforcemmtn type that gives the highest response
Variable rate of reiforcment gives rise to the highest response
Why do responses reoccur?
Because they have been reinforced
How do you remove a response?
Remove the reinforcer
How is an inappropriate response eliminated?
Punishment
What impacts Rate of responce
Reiforcer increases rate of response, punishment decreases rate of response
What are problems with punsihment?
Punishment can be interpreted incorrectly and actually be a reinforcer.
What is the alternative method to getting rid of an appropriate respnce?
Reinforce appropriate behaviour
How does avoidance relate to response?
Avoidance can be a reinforcer. For example, a kid will learn that not going to the dentist will cause no pain. Therefore, they have no desire to go.
What is social modeling?
Reinforcement from sources such as media, not your parents or peers
