anatomy of the brain and functions Flashcards
What kind of slice is coronal?
Ear to ear
What is a saggital slice?
From nose to back of head
Define a mid-saggital slice
slices the brain in two equal halves, from nose to back.
Define a horizontal slice
A slice parallel to the floor.
what procedure has replaced Positron Emission Tomography, and why?
fMRI. monitors blood flow to active areas of the brain instead of glucose, therefore much faster.
How does and EEG work? Economic value?
Little tiny electrodes are placed on the scalp, allowing detection of electrical activity within the brain. Very fast. Very cheap.
where are the small interneurons located in the spinal cord?
On the inside
What division of the nervous system do we have control over?
somatic nervous system
what nervous system do we not have control over?
The autonomic nervous system
What parts of the brain form the brainstem
the medulla, pons, and midbrain
name three things the brain stem is responsible for?
life support systems
sleep - wake cycle
specialized sense of the head, and their control (muscular)
What use is the thalamus?
It is responsible for filtering out information from the sensory nerves and passes on only that which is important. It is responsible for you being able to focus on one thing and shut everything else out.
what is the use of the hypothalamus?
controls the basic needs of the organism, like thirst and hunger. signals the pituitary gland.
what is the corpus callosum?
a thick white band of matter that connects the left side of the brain to the right
what does the lateral fissure separate?
separates the parietal lobes from the temporal
what portion of the brain is largely not determined by genetics?
the neocortex, because it is responsible for memory formation
What happens to people who damage the right parietal lobe?
Hemi - neglect. the cant process info on the left side of their body
what portion of the brain is responsible for short term memory?
the hypocampus
what happens if damage is sustained to the Broca’s area?
monotone speach
Damage to the Wernickes area in the right hemisphere will result in…
inability to understand emotional aspects of speach
What portions of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes are largest in humans?
the association complexes
where do higher mental functions take place?
the frontal lobe
what portion of the brain is responsible for long term memory?
parietal lobe
