Lean production Flashcards
What is lean production
Production techniques are working practices derived from Japan that focus on cutting waste whilst maintaining or improving quality
What are the two main principles of lean production
Just in time and kaizen
Describe Kaizen
A system that concentrates on small but frequent improvements in every aspect of the production process, all members of the workforce are involved and employees are encouraged to work in kaizen groups, requires a highly motivated and committed workforce
What are the benefits of just in time
Less costs in holding stock, less working capital required, less obsolete and ruined stock, lower security and insurance costs and avoids having unsold stock
What are the difficulties in just in time
Little room for error, very reliant on suppliers, unexpected orders harder to meet, delays in deliveries can halt production processes, high initial costs and complex systems need to be understood
What is cell production
A form of flow production where the production line is split into a series of self contained cells, each cell takes responsibility for the production of one complete unit
What are the benefits of cell production
Increases quality, team work and motivation
What does the success of cell working depend upon
Staff being well trained
What is time based management
A technique that recognises the importance and cost of time, seeks to reduce time wasted in the production process and hence reduce the time it takes to produce a good or service as well as reducing lead time however it requires flexibility in resources like machinery and staff
