What is appraisal
The process of monitoring and reviewing the performance of employees in the workplace
What are the purposes of appraisal
Monitors performance, provides feedback, non financial motivator, informs future training needs and identifies potential for future developments
What are the four methods of appraisal
Superiors assessment, peer assessment, self assessment and 360 degree assessment
What is a superiors assessment
A top down review process whereby a subordinates performance is assessed by a superior, normally their direct line manager
What are the negatives of supervisors assessments
Superior may not be fully trained in how to carry out the assessment and must be handles confidentially and sensitively
What is a peer assessment
A horizontal review process where an employees performance is reviewed by colleagues working at the same level
What are the positives of peer assessments
Reduces bias and can be less intimidating than superior assessments
What are self assessments
Employees review and form judgements on their own performance
What is a 360 degree assessment
A multi stage review process that combines superior, peer and self assessments as well as subordinate assessments
What are the advantages of 360 degree assessments
Increases self awareness, reduces workplace bias and creates an open culture
What are the disadvantages of 360 degree assessments
Pitting employees against each other, time consuming and they are not confidential
What are the benefits of appraisal to a business
Provides feedback on employee performance, informs future HR decisions, share common goals and create a more motivated workforce
What are the benefits of appraisal to employees
Linked to reward systems, opportunity to discuss progress and grievances, identify training needs and motivational (or stressful)
