Leaf Structure Flashcards
What is the leaf blade connected to?
The leaf blade is connected to the plant stem by a petiole.
What are leaves adapted for?
absorbing light
import water and ions
producing sugars in photosynthesis
export of sugars and amino acids
Where are leaves arranged?
Leaves are arranged on plants stems in three major patterns called alternate, opposite or whorled.
What is the mesophyll layer divided into? and describe them
The mesophyll layer may be differentiated into palisadae mesophyll and spongy mesophyll.
Palisade mesophyll cells are very compact and are usually found beneath the upper epidermis of the leaf.
Spongy mesophyll cells are irregular in shape and are found in the lower side of leaves, have fewer chlroplasts than palisade mesophyll cells.
Which mesophyll layer does photosynthesis occur and why?
Photosynthesis that occurs in the spongy mesophyll uses light of a higher wavelength that use by the palisade mesophyll
What are chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts are the organelles in which photosynthese take place, are found cotyledons, leaves, stems, fruits, flowers.
Describe Chloroplasts and its DNA
Chloroplasts have their own DNA and can produce some of their own proteins as well as multiply independently inside the cell in which they live.
What is Chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll is the main pigment found within the chloroplast but other photosynthetic pigments are present.
