Energy flow Flashcards
What is an ecosystem, niche, community, population?
ecosystem-is a system that environments and their organisms form through their interaction
niche- is a role and position a species takes up in its environment which includes its food, interaction with other species etc
community- is a group or association of populations of two or more different species occupying the same geographical area at the same time
population- consists of all the organisms of a given species that live in a particular area.
What is a trophic level?
position in the food chain
What are producer & consumers?
Producers- autotrophs, make their own food and do not depend on any other organism for nutrition, use photosynthesis to make food
Consumers- have to eat to gain energy or they will die. There are four types of consumers: omnivores, carnivores, herbivores and decomposers.
What are decomposers?
organisms such as bacteria and fungi that break down dead organisms and waste materials into nutrients usable by the producers.
What is the equation of ecological efficiency?
energy available to a trophic level/energy consumed by previous trophic level * 100
