Immunity Flashcards
What are parasites
are organisms that live in or an a host and gain nutrients and protection from the host organisms
What are examples of human pathogens?
viruses, bacteria, protoctists, fungi, worms, prions
What are 3 types of defences against infectious diseases?
mechanical- tissues provide physical barriers that pathogens cannot pass through unaided
chemical- substances secreted by the body provide inhospitable environments for pathogens
cellular- cells secrete hormone like chemicals to alert the body to the presence of pathogens
What is immune response?
is how your body recognizes and defends itself against bacteria, viruses, and substances that appear foreign and harmful
What is inflammation?
where histamine stimulates a range of non specific defences
What are phagocytes?
a cell (as a white blood cell) that takes in and breaks down foreign material (as bacteria) and waste.
What is humoral immune response?
involves the production of antibodies by b cells
What are cell mediated immune response?
does not involve b cells and antibodies, it involves cytotoxic T cells
