What is the Holistic approach to leadership?
Mix of:
1. Individual Characteristics
* skill level
* psychological factors
* personality
* motivation
2. Environmental factors
*community values/expectations
* level of sport professional/amateur
What is the Trait approach to leadership?
Suggests that leaders are born, not made (Big 5):
1. Neuroticism (emotional stability) (-ve)
2. Extraversion (+ve)
3. Agreeableness
4. Openness to Experience (+ve)
5. Conscientiousness (+ve)
* No universal traits that differentiate leaders and non-leaders but certain traits increase the likelihood that one will emerge as an effective leader
What is the Behavioural approach to leadership?
- leader behaviours mediate the relationship between traits and effectiveness
- 4 categories of behaviours:
1. Task-oriented behaviours - clearly define roles/expectations
2. Relational-oriented behaviours - approachable, collaborative
3. Change-oriented behaviours - enourages risk/innovation, developes vision for change
4. Passive leadership - inaction
What are the 3 Leadership styles
- Autocratic
- Democratic
- Laissez-faire
What is the Multidimensional Model of Leadership? (Developed specific for sport)
Athlete performance/statisfaction is dependant on:
* Situational factors = environment, grp size, competition, elite/social
* Leader characteristics = experience, personal qualities, skills, expectations, decision-making skills
* Athlete characteristics = Gender, age, skill, motivation, cultural, experience
Based on your understanding of the key elements of coaching and leadership (Traits, Styles, Qualities) – Explain how you would apply this knowledge when given the task of leading a new group of people (athletes, employees, students or clients – you choose the demographic) and what your focus would be for that individual/group?
