Disability
A physical or mental impairment that limits a persons major life activities
Ex. Walking, seeing, hearing, learning, interacting, working, etc
Physical disabilities
Aka neurological disorders which can also be caused by illness or injury
- deaf
- blind
- brain or spinal injury
Developmental disabilities
Manifest before 18 and can continue indefinitely
Ex.
- mental retardation
- cerebral palsy
- epilepsy
- autism
- down syndrome
Mental disability
A group of disorders that can cause disturbances in thinking or feeling
*two primary disorders: thought (schizo) and mood disorders (bipolar)
Mental Retardation
*not the same as mental illness
A below average intellectual functioning or deficits in adaptive behavior
Indicators of mental retardation
Impaired communication Short attention span Poor sense of time Immature social relations Overly compliant Difficulty with simple task Poor understanding of consequences and actions
Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral (Brain) Palsy (impaired body movements)
*a large group of chronic conditions that affect body movements and coordination
- loss of motor control
- limited range of motion
- involuntary jerk movements
- slow slurred speech
Autism
Developmental disability that affects the ability to function and interact with others
- don’t like being touched
- sensitive to noise
- fascinated by shiny objects
- repetitive movements like rocking
- social isolation
- Echolalia (repeating what others say)
Epilepsy
Brain disorder that causes seizures when clusters of nerve cells send out the wrong signals
*cannot be cured but controlled by meds

Starring spells Tick like movements Slurred speech Lips smacking Eyes rolling Urination

Written to establish CA responsibility for services for people with developmental disabilities. Intent was to maximize the services to prevent removing the disabled from their home communities
Traumatic Neurological Disorder
A physical disability caused by injury to the spine or brain
Traumatic Brain Injury
An alteration in brain function caused by an external force (open or closed head injury)
Inidicators of mental illness
Fearfulness Inappropriate behavior Extreme rigidity(not flexible) Excitability Impaired self care(doesn't take care of self) Hallucinations Delusions Clinical depressions
Schizophrenia
Most common thought disorder
- bizarre delusional thinking
- hallucinations
- incoherent
- poor reasoning
