What are political influences on the law
During general election each party creates a manifesto which outlines their promises. This outlines the bills they would like to put out before parliament
What is the law commission and what do they do
Independent body set up in 1965 to keep law in England and Wales under review and recommend change when necessary
- Put forward recommendations to codify the law
- Repeal acts which are no longer in use or needed
How does the law commission work
- study laws to outline any problems
- Create consultation papers which sets out the issues with the law and look at the options to change it
- consultation papers then are shown to the public via social media, internet and other relevant parties
- Law commission then produces a report to the lord chancellor which often includes a draft bill which is shown to parliament to be debated.
What is the media’s influence on the law
- Put pressure on government to make changes
- Media often shapes peoples opinion on the governments decisions
Influence of the public
Close to general elections the government will want to stay popular with the public often making them listen to the public.
Influence of pressure groups and what are they
Groups of people who have an interest in a specific topic and want to bring certain issues to the governments attention e.g. Greenpeace
What methods to pressure groups use to try and influence the government and law.
- contacting MP’s
- Gaining public and media’s support
- Making petitions and arranging rally’s
What is lobbying
when pressure groups try to persuade MP’s to support their cause
