Q

Describe the course of the superficial fibular nerve

A

Begins b/w fibularis longus and fibula
Descends between fibular muscles and lateral to extensor digitorum longus
Becomes superficial in distal third of the leg

Q

What is the most commonly injured LE nerve?

A

Common fibular nerve because it winds superficially around the fibular head

16
Q

What does injury to the common fibular nerve result in?

A

Paralysis of all anterior and lateral crural muscles

Loss of dorsiflexion and eversion causes foot drop in the individual

17
Q

Describe foot drop

A

Difficult to achieve heel strike
Pt has high stepping gait, waddling gait or swing out gait
If leg is swung strongly forward the foot strikes with a clop noise

18
Q

What is leg compartmental syndrome?

A

Increased pressure within a compartment of the leg caused by trauma
Trauma may lead to hemorrhage, edema and inflammation
Intracompartmental pressure may lead to ischemia and permanent injury

19
Q

What can be performed to relieve pressure in leg compartmental syndrome?

A

Incising facia (fasciotomy)
