Lateral Leg Flashcards
What is the location for the lateral leg compartment?
Lateral surface of the tibia between anterior and posterior crural septa
What structures are contained within the lateral leg compartment?
Fibularis brevis and longus muscles
Superficial fibular nerve
What are the functions of the fibularis brevis and longus muscles of the lateral compartment?
Eversion and plantar flexion
What are the attachment sites for fibularis longus?
O: head and superolateral 2/3 of fibula
I: 1st metatarsal and medial cuneiform bone
What are the attachment sites for fibularis brevis?
O: inferolateral 2/3 of fibula
I: tuberosity on the lateral side of 5th metatarsal
What innervates the lateral compartment?
Superficial fibular nerve
Describe the course of the superficial fibular nerve
Begins b/w fibularis longus and fibula
Descends between fibular muscles and lateral to extensor digitorum longus
Becomes superficial in distal third of the leg
What other structures does the superficial fibular nerve supply?
Nearly the entire dorsal surface of the foot
Most of the dorsal aspect of the digits
What is the arterial supply to the lateral compartment?
Branches that pass anteriorly from the fibular artery
What is the largest branch of the posterior tibial A?
Fibular A
What is a unique characteristic of the lateral compartment?
It is the one compartment without a distinct arterial branch accompanying the compartment nerve
What is a unique structure on the calcaneus?
Fibular trochlea - contains a ridge on the lateral surface
What does the cuboid articulate with?
Calcaneus posteriorly
4th and 5th metatarsals anteriorly
Navicular and lateral cuneiform medially
What is the cuboid sulcus?
Groove for fibularis longus
What is the most commonly injured LE nerve?
Common fibular nerve because it winds superficially around the fibular head
