Larynx Muscles (intrinsic) Flashcards

1
Q

whats the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the larynx?

what is the function of intrinsic muscles of the larynx?

A

For both origin and insertion are inside larynx.

intrinsic muscles control pitch, loudness, and voice quality for the voice. also control the biological valve function. control all sounds of the human voice.

Q

The 5 intrinsic muscles of the larynx are…

Thyro________ composed of the thyro_______ and thyro______.

Posterior __________

Lateral __________

Inter________ composed of the oblique and transverse parts

_____thyroid composed of the pars _______ and the pars ______

A

Thyroarytenoid composed of the thyromuscularis and thyrovocalis.

Posterior cricoarytenoid

Lateral Cricoarytenoid

Interarytenoid composed of the oblique and transverse parts

Q

The 3 actions of the intrinsic muscles are

1) To adjust the __________ ________ on the TVF’s (ie, shape of the glottis)
2) Control ________ behavior which refers to how much _______ _______ (ie, _________) or if they are _________ (spread apart)
3) ____ supply

All of these functions serve to change the ________ of the voice

A

The 3 actions of the intrinsic muscles are

1) To adjust the longitudinal tension on the TVF’s (ie, shape of the glottis)
2) Control vibratory behavior which refers to how much medial compression (ie, adduction) or if they are abducted (spread apart)
3) air supply

All of these functions serve to change the sound of the voice

Q

Thyroarytenoid is an _______ muscle and acts as an adductor, ______ and ______

It is the muscle of the TVF’s that arises from ______ of ______ cartilage on the ________ aspect. It courses posteriorly to insert on the ________ cartilage. Contraction moves the whole thing. It has 2 parts…

1) thyro_______ goes from thyroid cartilage to muscular process of arytenoid
2) thyro_______ goes from thryoid cartilage to the vocal process of the arytenoid

A

Thyroarytenoid is an intrinsic muscle and acts as an adductor, tensor and relaxer

Thyroarytenoid is the muscle of the TVF’s that arises from angle of thyroid cartilage on the posterior aspect. It courses posteriorly to insert on the arytenoid cartilage. Contraction moves the whole thing. It has 2 parts…

1) thyromuscularis goes from thyroid cartilage to muscular process of arytenoid
2) thyrovocalis goes from thryoid cartilage to the vocal process of the arytenoid

Q

The posterior cricoarytenoid (intrinsic) acts as the only muscle of VF _______. This makes it the only laryngeal muscle for _______.

Its origin is on the lamina of ________ cartilage. It courses laterally and superiorly and inserts on the muscular process of _______ cartilage. Contraction pulls the muscular processes ________

A

The posterior cricoarytenoid (intrinsic) acts as the only muscle of VF abduction. This makes it the only laryngeal muscle for breathing.

Posterior cricoarytenoid origin is on the lamina of cricoid cartilage. It courses laterally and superiorly and inserts on the muscular process of arytenoid cartilage. Contraction pulls the muscular processes backwards

Q

The lateral cricoarytenoid (intrinsic) acts as an _______ and _______

It arises from the _______ surface on the lateral sides of _______ cartilage, courses posteriorly and inserts on the front of the ________ process.

Contraction pulls the muscular processes ________ and this _______ the vocal folds

A

The lateral cricoarytenoid (intrinsic) acts as an adductor and relaxer

It arises from the superior surface on the lateral sides of cricoid cartilage, courses posteriorly and inserts on the front of the muscular process.

Contraction pulls the muscular processes frontwards and this adducts the vocal folds

Q

The interarytenoid (intrinsic) acts as an _______

It is between the 2 _______ cartilages. The muscle fibers arise fro one _______ and cross to the other. It has 2 parts…

________ inter_______ goes across the muscular processes

_______ inter_________ (angles across) starts from muscular process of one arytenoid and goes upwards and laterally to corniculate of arytenoid on other side. inserts on epiglottis.

is the muscle of the ________ fold

Contraction pulls the epiglottic cartilage ________

A

The interarytenoid (intrinsic) acts as an adductor

It is between the 2 arytenoid cartilages. The muscle fibers arise fro one arytenoid and cross to the other. It has 2 parts…

transverse interarytenoid goes across the muscular processes

oblique interarytenoid (angles across) starts from muscular process of one arytenoid and goes upwards and laterally to corniculate of arytenoid on other side. inserts on epiglottis.

is the muscle of the aryepiglottic fold

Contraction pulls the epiglottic cartilage backwards

Describe how and why the larynx is _______ protected during swallowing.

1) _______ folds posteriorly over the opening of larynx
2) ________ folds contract and close
3) _____ contract and close
4) _____ contract and close for protection of the airway from ________ of food and drink!

A

Describe how and why the larynx is quadruple protected during swallowing.

1) epiglottis folds posteriorly over the opening of larynx
2) aryepiglottic folds contract and close
3) FVF’s contract and close
4) TVF’s contract and close for protection of the airway from aspiration of food and drink!

Q

The cricothyroid (intrinsic) acts as a ______

It has 2 parts…

pars _____

pars ______

It is the muscle of _____ change. Works by decreasing the gap between cricoid and thyroid cartilages which _______ the TVF’s and _______ pitch, or shortening them which ________ pitch

A

The cricothyroid (intrinsic) acts as a tensor

It has 2 parts…

pars recta

pars oblique

It is the muscle of pitch change. Works by decreasing the gap between cricoid and thyroid cartilages which lengthens the TVF’s and increases pitch, or shortening them which decreases pitch
