Large and Small intestine Flashcards
The gastroileal reflex is responsibe for what?
Causes the passage of digested material from the ileum into the cecum.
What are the two common bacterial species of the colon?
E. coli and
Bacteroides
Which segment of the intestines is chrons disease most commonly seen in and which layer does it typically effect?
Chrons disease is typically seen in the ileum and effects the submucosa eventually spreading to the mucosa and serosa in a “Skip lesion fashion”
Where does ulcerative collitis originate/
Originates in the large intestines within the crypts of leiberkhun.
A patient presents with intestinal pain, joint pain, and malnourishment.
What should come to mind with these buzz words?
Inflammatory bowel disease.
Describe what is happening in the gastroenteric reflex
Distension of the stomach or small intestine are the key stimuli that cause peristaltic contractions downstream.
Describe what is happening in the coloncolic reflexes
Mass movements begin when there is distension in the colon!
Describe what occurs in the gastrocolic reflex
Stomach distention leads to parastalsis in the colon.
What is the intrinsic reflex in relation to defication?
Distention in the distal colon causes the ENS to create contractions through the myenteric plexus moving fecal material toward the rectum.
What do the duodenal I cells release?
CCK
What do the Bruners glands release?
These glands release Mucus and Bicarbonate.
Are stimulated by Secretin!!!
Where are the intestinal goblet cells, Secretory enterocytes, and absorptive enterocytes found?
These are commonly found within the Crypts of Leiberkuhn.
What is Hirschsprungs disease?
Functional motor dysfunction resulting in loss of myenteric ganglion in development.
Seen causing constipation, megacolon, or narrowing of the colon.
Whats the difference between ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease?
Origin points!
Ulcerative colitis originates in the colon crypts of leiberkuhn
Crohns typically originates in the submucosa of the ileum.
