Language of Chemistry Flashcards
Binary compounds representation
- Elements (except H) further to the left of the periodic table appears
first
Hydrogen exception: written last except when with group 16 or 17
If both elements are from the same group the lowest element
appears first
In ionic compounds the cation is followed by the anion
- Ionic compounds
Cation followed by anion. e.g. NaBr, MgCl

Total charge zero:
what are Binary ionic compounds
Binary ionic compounds
contain positive cations and
negative anions
Type I compounds
Type I compounds
* Metal present forms
only one cation
Type II compounds
Type II compounds
* Metal present can form
2 or more cations with
different charges
Rules for Naming Type I Ionic Compounds
- The cation is always named first and the anion second.
- A simple cation takes its name from the name of the element.
A simple anion is named by taking the first part of the element name
(the root) and adding –ide.
IUPAC Binary Ionic Compounds (Type II)
- Metals in these compounds
can form more than one type
of positive charge. - Charge on the metal ion must
be specified. - Roman numeral indicates the
charge of the metal cation. - Transition metal cations
usually require a Roman
numeral.
Rules for Naming Type II Ionic Compounds
- The cation is always named first and the anion second.
- Because the cation can assume more than one charge, the
charge is specified by a Roman numeral in parentheses.
what is an allotrope?
Parent chain:
the longest carbon chain.
Substituents:
any branch off the parent chain, named based on alkyl groups.
