Landry and Bartling (2011) Flashcards
Aim:
To investigate the effect of articulary suppression on the memory recall of phonological dissimilar letters in serial recall.
Participants
34 undergraduate psychology students
Procedure
The participants were split equally into 2 groups, both groups were given the same task where they were presented with a list of 7 phonologically dissimilar letters for 5 seconds, told to wait 5 seconds, and then had to recall the letters in serial recall. However, one group had to perform this task whilst also performing an articulary surpession task where they had to count 1-2 every second through the whole duration of the task.
Results
The results showed that the participants with the articulary supression task had performed significantly poorly recalling the phonologically disimilar letters in serial recall when compared to the group without the articulary surpression task. The results indicate that the articulary supression task had not allowed for rehearsal in the phonological loop due to overloading
