Procedure

• The study used a double blind procedure, participants were randomly allocated to two conditions, the were either injected with placebo or scopolamine
• participants were then placed into an fMRI whilst playing the “arena task” a game where researchers observe how well participants can create spatial memories within a virtual maze task
• After 6 trials, the participants returned back 3-4 weeks later where the received the opposite treatment they did the 1st trial. (repeated measures)

• The researchers had found that when the participants were injected with scopolamine, they showed a significant reduce in the activation of the hippocampus compared to when they received placebo.
• it appears that the acetylcholine may play a crucial role in the encoding of spatial memories in humans.
