Brown and Kullik (1977) Flashcards
Aim
To investigate whether personal or surprsing events can trigger the creation of flashbulb memories
Participants:
40 black and 40 white americans
Procedure:
All the participants were emailed a questionair asking them about the details they could recall about the day they found out about the passing of a loved one, and the passing of a public figure such as John F kennedy, and Martin Luther King. The questions aimed to identify, the amount of detail they recalled about the day, how emotional it was for them, the amount of rehearsal that may have occured, and how personal it was.
Results
The results showed that 90% of the particpants had recalled signifcant details about the day they had found out about a loved ones passing. However, this changed when it came to the public figure Martin Luther king, 75% of the black americans had devloped flashbulb memories whilst only 33% of white americans did. These results provide evidence of flashbulb memories, and that they only occur when an event is either personal, or evokes a lot of emotion
