What is negative transfer?
Previously learnt skills hindering the development of new ones
What is positive transfer?
Previously learnt skills help development of new skills
What is bilateral transfer?
The transfer of learning from one limb to another, rather than from skill to skill
( switching from orthodox to southpaw )
( kicking with your weak foot in football )
What is proactive transfer?
When a skill being learnt has an effect on future tasks.
E.g throwing and catching practice will aid a basketball we in a future game
What is retroactive transfer?
When a skill being learnt has an effect on previously learnt skills
What is zero transfer?
When the task has no effect on the performance of another task.
What can coaches do to maximise the opportunity of transfer of learning?
Identify elements which may hinder learning
Planned progression
Make practice sessions realistic
Eliminate bad habits
Performer is well motivated
What is transfers of learning?
Refers to the influence that a previously practiced task will have on the learning of a completely new one
