LAMPON - Skill & Ability Flashcards
Definition of skill?
Skill is the learned ability to bring about pre determined results with maximum certainty often with the minimum outlay of time, energy or both!
Different types of skill? (3)
Cognitive, motor and perceptual
What’s cognitive skill?
Involving thought processes ( the problem solving stage ) for example, planning a combination to throw in a boxing match. Strategical.
What is a motor skill?
This stage involves the actual movement and doing of the sport! Like actually throwing the punch you’ve cognitively thought about previously
What’s perceptual stage in skill?
Recognition of situations in an activity or game, judgement of distance, speed, when and where to pass, it’s your vision! For example on FIFA Xavi’s pass is insane and he can pick out the best balls you can imagine
What’s a different word for skill which means cognitive, motor and perceptual? Psy…
Psychomotor!
What’s a continuum?
A continuum is a sequence of graduation between two extremes
Name the 4 continuums? Open and... Self paced and... Discrete,?,? Gross and...
Open and closed
Gross and fine
Discrete, serial and continuous
Self paced and externally paced
What does open and closed mean? (In continuums)
Open is where the environment can change
E.g a pass in football
Closed means environment does not change. Complete control of timing, E.g penalty
What’s does gross and fine mean? (In continuums)
Relates to the muscles.
Gross motor skills involve large body parts, involving large muscular movement.
An example is passing in football
Fine motor skills require control of the small muscles of the body to achieve the goal of the skill.
An example is a snooker shot or a dart throw
What does self paced and externally paced mean? ( in continuums)
Self paced means the performer controls the start of the movement
An example is a golf swing
Externally paced means the performer initiates start of movement based on another individual
An example is Usain bolt in 100M, waiting for the gun before he can react!
What does discrete, serial and continuous mean? (In continuums)
Discrete skills have a clear beginning and end.
Examples include a penalty shot and golf swing
Serial skills are made of a number of discrete skills in order to create a movement sequence.
Example includes sprint start.
Continuous skills have no clear beginning or end.
Examples include cycling, running and swimming. ( the end of one cycle of movement is the begging of the next )
