LAMPON - Memory Flashcards
What is the short term sensory store? (STSS)
Receives information from the display via sensory system
Has a very large capacity
Can only retain the information for a short period of time.
Irrelevant information quickly lost
Information is filtered by selective attention process
Characteristics of selective attention?
Filtering/blocking out unnecessary information and focusing solely on relevant information.
Ignoring the crowd ( experienced )
Basically forgetting everything which doesn’t affect performance. When boxing, you don’t think about who’s their watching you, you think about winning!
How can selective attention be improved?
Learn to ignore irrelevant information by training with distractions
Lists of relevant practice of what needs to be know and what doesn’t.
Mental rehearsal, must allocate time.
Increase intensity of the stimulus
Focusing on specific cues!
What is the short term memory?
Receives information from short term sensory store.
Only selective attended information enters.
It has limited capacity and duration.
It is here that information is compared to previously learned information in the long term memory before a decision is made.
Initiates motor programme ( the movement )
If information is not practiced/reinforced then it will be lost
But if practice/ reinforcement then it will transfer to the long term memory
How can a performer improve their Short Term Memory?
Chunking - information is chunked not individualised.
Chaining - the linking together of information
E.g a boxer putting combinations together.
Practice
Using selective attention - limiting the amount of irrelevant information into Short Term Memory
What is the long term memory?
Holds information permanently through repetition and practice.
Stores large amounts of information for unlimited amounts of time.
Holds different motor programmes
When faced with new situation, relevant information is passed from STM where comparisons are made with past experiences and decision is made quickly if it is completely new then a new motor programme will be formed
How can a performer improve their Long term memory?
Rehearsal, reinforce, repeat actions
Develop a range of past experiences E.g realistic practice ( sparring )
Make information meaningful to the performer
Mental rehearsal!!
Group or chunk information together
What are the three components of memory?
The short term sensory store
The short term memory
The long term memory
( selective attention can be named as a fourth )
