What are some rights of workers today?
Right to refuse unsafe work, minimum wage, breaks, paid overtime, protection from discrimination.
What is new model unionism?
Illeagal craft based organizations pre- 1900s. Ex. nine hour movement.
What are union dues?
A percentage of wages taken off payroll for the union to pay for collective bargaining. The Rand Formula requires workers covered by the agreement to pay dues, allows for union security.
What are current trends in unions?
Larger unions, social unionism, global labour movement.
How does macroeconomic policy impact unions?
Privatization, deregulation, and free trade weaken unions.
How does the labour market influence unions?
It determines compensation and conditions.
How does competition in the product market impact unions?
More competition weakens unions.
How does the market for substitute factors of production impact unions?
Competitive substitute market weakens union power.
While people generally support unions, what are some reasons people may question the need for them?
Globalization pressures to be competitive, we have employment laws, better HR, changing nature of work.
What compositional changes have occurred in unions?
More women, more public sector/childcare and less tech, more contingent work that is incompatible with unionization.
Who is work-life balance important to?
Employee and employer because it impacts absenteeism, benefits costs, and productivity.
