What is human resource management?
Relationship between employer and individual employees.
What is industrial relations?
Involves broader relations and issues with employer, employee, and government.
What is labour relations?
Relationship between employer and groups of employees, ie. unions and management
Who are stake holders in industrial relations?
Government, organization, management, employees, unions.
What are the influences on industrial relations?
Economic (wages), organization (goals, rep), the job (hours, tasks), legislation, ecological, political.
Characteristics of precarious work:
Unstable, temporary, no fixed contract/short contract.
What is the neoclassical view of industrial relations?
Restrict wages and disincentivize hard work.
What is the political economy view of industrial relations?
Stresses the inherent conflict between employer and employee. Looks at different economic forms ex. capitalism, socialism etc.
What is the human resources/strategic choice view of industrial relations?
Focus on cooperation to minimize the need for unions.
What is the pluralist/institutional view of industrial relations?
Recognizes the many institutions involved to balance the interests of employer and employees.
