Why do unions want specific language?
Limits manager favouritism.
What is a collective agreement?
Agreement between union (representing bargaining unit) and employer. Lays out rules and procedures workplace practices and relationships.
What is a letter of understanding?
An agreed upon practice at the end of the CA that must be renewed every term.
What are the five types of clauses in a CA?
1) Rights of the parties, 2) organization of work, 3) labour relations process, 4) education/training/development 5) conditions of work

What is an example of a parties rights clause?
Employee rights and security such as anti-discrimination language and health services.
What is an example of an organization of work clause?
Protection from tech changes such as wage protection (red-circling).
What is an example of a labour relations process clause?
The grievance process and when it goes to arbitration.
What is an example of an education/training/development clause?
Access to or repayment for training/education.
What is an example of a conditions of work clause?
Wages, time off, discipline etc. (any money or time things)
What is bumping?
When senior employees pass on their layoff to less senior employees.
What is super seniority?
Union leaders are given this to protect them from layoff.
Should CAs have clear language?
Yes.
