Laboratory Equipment Flashcards
A flask is?
A glass container with a thin neck that widens to a flat or rounded base. Used to measure, heat, and store liquids.
What is a beaker?
a wide container with a flat bottom made of glass or plastic
Commonly used to mix, heat, and hold liquids
Describe Erlenmeyer Flasks
A a flask with a cone shaped base. Oft used to to hold liquids during a filtration or titration process. They are naturally very stable
Describe a Florence flask.
A spherical flask that may have a rounded or flat base. They are used for heating and are naturally very strong
Describe a volumetric flask
A flask with a pear shaped base and a long neck, commonly has a stopper. Each is designed to hold a specific volume.
Describe a graduated cylinder
A tall, cylindrical container with a wide, flat base used to measure the volume of liquids. The top usually has a small, curved lip.
What is a meniscus?
The inward curve at the top of a liquid.
What is displacement?
The process of one substance taking the place of another
What is a Buret?
A long glass cylinder used to measure and dispense a specific volume of a liquid very accurately via stopcock valve.
A bulb thermometer is……
A thermometer with a liquid inside and markings to track the expansion and contraction of the liquid.
What is a semiconductor?
A substance that conducts when hot, but resists when cold.
What is a manometer?
A device that measures the pressure of a fluid. One side is open to the atmosphere and shows whether it has high or low pressure.
What is a barometer?
A manometer that measures atmospheric pressure.
What is Evangelista Torricelli’s contribution to science?
He invented the first Mercury barometer.
What is a pipette?
A device used to measure and grander a small amount of liquid.
