Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What are reactants?
The starting material(s) for a chemical reaction.
What are products?
The substance(s) produced by a reaction. If they are unwanted or unplanned for, they are classified as byproducts.
What is a synthesis reaction?
When two reactants combine to form one product.
A+B=AB
What is a Decomposition reaction?
A chemical reaction in which a single reactant forms two or more products.
AB= A+B
What is a Displacement reaction?
When a reactant takes a place in another compound.
A + BC= AB + C
What is a double displacement reaction?
When two compounds swap elements to form Two new products.
AB+CD= AD + CB
What is a oxidation reduction reaction?
A reaction in which the oxidation number of an atom changes. Oxidation is an increase in oxidation # and reduction is a decrease in oxidation #. They occur together. The oxidizing agent is the element reduced, and the reducing agent is the element oxidized. Combustion and corrosion are redox reactions.
What is a chain reaction?
A series of chemical reactions in which the products initiate a further reaction. Is comprised of the Initiation Reaction, then any propagating reactions, and finally termination where some necessary material is exhausted.
What is a reversible reaction?
A reaction that can go forwards or backwards depending on the conditions of the experiment. Both products and reactants may be present at a state of equilibrium.
What is equilibrium?
The state of a chemical reaction at which the forward and reverse reactions occur at the same rate.
What is endo and exothermic?
Endothermic is a reaction that absorbs energy, while a exothermic reaction releases it.
What is the energy of activation?
The energy required to engage a chemical reaction.
What can effect the rate of a chemical reaction?
A increase of temperature or concentration of reactants.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that allows a reaction to occur at a different rate or in a different condition.
When does a chemical reaction occur?
When atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to produce one or more substances.
