Acids, Bases, and pH Flashcards
What does an acid do?
A acid releases positive hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. The higher the hydrogen ions concentration, the more acidic the substance.
They can conduct electricity and are corrosive. When they react with metals, they produce salts.
Pure water is where on the pH scale?
7 or even. Not acidic or basic.
What factor does the pH scale move on?
A factor of 10
Can there be a negative pH?
Yes. Hypothetically, there can even be a pH of -2!!!
A base does?
Bases release hydroxide ions, are naturally slippery, and are commonly called alkalis.
All alkalis are bases, but not all bases are alkalis!
The pH scale is?
The scale from 0-14 that measures acidity.
List color coordination on the pH scale.
0-2 red 2.1-3.8 orange 5-5.5 yellow 6.5-7.4 green 8-14 blue
The strength of acids and bases is based on?
How well their release hydroxides or hydrogen ions. Larger and more electronegative anions and cations are less strong.
Name and describe 3 indicators.
Litmus paper- paper that turns red or blue based on the acidity of the substance its in.
Phenolphthalein solution- a solution that turns from clear to pink for a pH higher than 9.
Bromothymol Blue- turns yellow in acids and blue in bases.
