Lab Values & Drug Monitoring Flashcards
What is the definition of a Complete Blood Count?
- ## Lab panel with WBCs [differential = ALL WBC types], RBCs [Hgb, Hct], Platelets
What is the definition of Basic Metabolic Panel?
- 7 - 8 tests: Electrolytes, glucose, renal function, acid/base
What is it when there is an increase in an individual blood cell line?
WBC, RBC, Platelets?
- WBC: Leukocytosis
- RBC: Polycythemia
- Platelets:Thromobocytosis
What is it when there is a decrease in an individuals blood cell line?
RBCs, WBCs, Platelet?
- WBC: Leukopenia
- RBC: Anemia
- Platelets: Thrombocytopenia
What is it call when there is a decrease in multiple bllod cell lines?
RBC, WBC, Platelets, Granulocytes?
- WBC, RBC, Platelets: Myelosuppression
- Granulocytes: Agranulocytosis
What are some drugs that can cause agranulocytosis?
- Clozapine, Propylthiourical, Methimazole, Procainamide, carbamazepine, Isoniazid, SMX/TMP
What is the common range for Calium (Ca), Total?
- 8.5 - 10.5 mg/dL
What are some additional notes about the Calcium (Ca), Total lab values?
Increase or decrease?
- Calculate corrected Ca if albumin is low
- increace Ca supp due to Vit D, thiazides
- decrease Ca due to heparin, loops, bisphophonates, cinacalcet
What is the common range of Magnesium (Mg)?
- 1.3 - 2.1 mEq/L
What are some additional notes about the Magnesium (Mg) lab values?
- Decrease do to PPI, Diurectics, Amp B
What is the common range for Sodium (Na)?
- 135 - 145 mEq/L
What are some of the additional notes for Sodium (Na) lab values?
Increase or decrease?
- Increase due to hypertonic saline, tolvaptain
- Decresae do to cabamazepine, oxcarbazepine, SSRIs, diuretics
What is the Common Range for Phosphate (PO4)?
- 2.3 - 4.7 mg/dL
What are some additional notes about the Phosphate (PO4) lab values?
- Increased in CKD
What is the common ranges for Potassium (K)?
- 3.5 - 5 mEq/L
What are some additional notes about the Potassium (K) lab values?
Increase or decrease?
- Increase due to ACEi, ARBs, Aldosterone antagonists, aliskiren, canaglilozin, cyclosporine, tacrolimus, K supps. SMX/TMP…
- Decrease due to Beta 2 Agonists, Diurectics, Insulin
What is the common range for Bicarbonate (HCO3 or “bicarb”)?
Venous and Arterial
- Venous: 24 - 30 mEq/L
- Arterial: 22- 26 mEq/L
What are some additional notes about the Bicarbonate (HCO3 or “bicarb”) lab values?
- Decreases due to topiramate
What is the common range for Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)?
- 7 - 20 mg/dL
What are some additional notes about the Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) lab values?
- Increased in renal impairment and dehydration
What is the common range for Serum Creatinine (SCr)?
- 0.6 - 1.3 mg/dL
What are some additional notes about the Serum Creatinine (SCr) lab values?
- increased due to A LOT of drugs that impair renal functions [AGs, Amp B, Cisplatin, Colistimethate, Cyclosporine, Loops, Polymyxin, NSIADs, Dyes, Tacrolimus, Vanc…]
What is the common range for Glucose?
- 70 - 110 mg/dL
What is the common range for Anion Gap (AG)?
- 5 - 12 mEq/L
