Lab practical 2 Flashcards
How does CIDR work in cattle
It releases progesterone to modify the cow/heifers estrous cycle
What is the effect of oxytocin on the uterine smooth muscle
Causes uterine contraction
What does PGF2alpha do to uterine smooth muscle cells
Causes myometrial contractions
What happens to the motility of sperm when you add water
It decreases the motility
What happens to sperm motility when you expose it to procaine HCL
It causes hyperactivity
What happens to the motility of sperm when you extend the thaw time
The sperm slowly die off
What are the three reasons semen in bulls is packaged in straws rather than ampules
Reduced sperm loss during thawing, thawing time is less, and depositing semen is easier w/ a catheter
What are the signs of estrus in horses
Flagging, posturing, urinating, winking, and standing to be mounted
What are the sings of estrus in cattle
Standing to be mounted, aggressively attempting to mount other cows, thin watery mucus from vulva, nervousness, chin resting and vocalization
Advs to using AI in cattle
Ability to use sires that excel in economically important traits, ability to obtain info on young sires more quickly, reduce transmission of STDs, and you dont need to keep bulls on farm
What are the signs of estrus in dogs
Posturing, swollen vulva, and copulation
What are estrus detection aids in cattle
Tail paint, KMAR patch (center strip of grey turns red), estrotech patch( whole thing turns from grey to red), and heat watch (monitors are placed on the tail head of females that communicate to a reciever that collects data on when each individual female for humans to interpret)
What are some diagnostic tools that can be used to determine if a dog has ovulated
Progesterone blood test and cytology of the vulva
