Lab 5 (Part 1) Flashcards
The PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (PNS) is composed of how many pairs of NERVES?
43 pair of NERVES
How many pairs of NERVES are connected the the BRAIN, and what are they called?
12 pairs, called CRANIAL NERVES
How many pairs of NERVES are connected to the SPINAL CORD, and what are they called?
31 pairs, called SPINAL NERVES
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 1? Describe its function.
1 = OLFACTORY NERVE, a SENSORY NERVE used for smell
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 2? Describe its function.
2 = OPTIC NERVE, a SENSORY NERVE used for vision
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 3? Describe its function.
3 = OCULOMOTOR NERVE, a MOTOR NERVE used for movements of the eye/eyelid and constriction of the pupil
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 4? Describe its function.
4 = TROCHLEAR NERVE, a MOTOR NERVE used for movements of the eye
e.g. looking downwards
1 of 6 eye muscles; the SUPERIOR OBLIQUE
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 5? Describe its function.
5 = TRIGEMINAL NERVE, a SENSORY and MOTOR NERVE used to detect touch, temp., and pain from face. Chewing as well
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 6? Describe its function.
6 = ABDUCENS NERVE, a MOTOR NERVE used for lateral movement of the eye
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 7? Describe its function.
7 = FACIAL NERVE, a SENSORY and MOTOR NERVE used for taste from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue, muscles of facial expression, tears, saliva, nasal mucus secretion
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 8? Describe its function.
8 = VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR NERVE, a SENSORY NERVE used for hearing and equilibrium, detects info about balance/movement
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 9? Describe its function.
9 = GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL NERVE, a SENSORY and MOTOR NERVE used for detecting taste from the posterior 1/3 of the tongue, sensation from face and ear, regulate BP, secretion, of saliva, and swallowing muscles
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 10? Describe its function.
10 = VAGUS NERVE, a SENSORY and MOTOR NERVE used to detect sensory info from digestive and respiratory tracts, slows down heart rate, bronchoconstriction, GI secretion and motility, swallowing muscles
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 11? Describe its function.
11 = ACCESSORY NERVE, a MOTOR NERVE used for the head and neck muscles (STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID and TRAPEZIUS) and the swallowing muscles
What is CRANIAL NERVE number 12? Describe its function.
12 = HYPOGLOSSAL NERVE, a MOTOR NERVE used to control the muscles of the tongue
What NERVE is involved in the following situation: Person experiences VERTIGO (dizziness and loss of balance)
8, VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR NERVE
