Balance Flashcards
What is the VESTIBULAR COMPLEX composed of?
UTRICLE, SACCULE, and SEMICIRCULAR DUCTS
What do the UTRICLE and SACCULE do?
Detect changes in position of head, detect linear acceleration e.g. car, elevator
What do the SEMICIRCULAR DUCTS do?
Detect changes in rate of rotation
What is a VESTIBULAR HAIR CELL?
20-50 STEREOCILIA, 1 KINOCILIUM
What happens when the STEREOCILIA bend towards the KINOCILIUM?
Depolarization = An increased rate of AP
What happens when the STEREOCILIA bend away from the KINOCILIUM?
Hyperpolarization = A decreased rate of AP
What does the UTRICLE detect?
Movement of head away from verticle (bending), horizontal movement forwards, backwards, side-to-side
What does the SACCULE detect?
Movement of head away from horizontal (getting up), vertical movement (jumping, elevator)
What do the SEMICIRCULAR DUCTS detect?
Changes in rotational movement (spinning, turning)
What can be found embedded in the AMPULLA?
HAIR CELLS
What happens to the CUPULA when ENDOLYMPH moves?
It sways :)
Where does balance take place?
Inner ear
What structures are involved in balance?
VESTIBULAR NERVE, COCHLEAR NERVE, UTRICLE, SACCULE, SEMICIRCULAR CANALS
does balance use a TONIC or PHASIC receptor?
TONIC
What receptor cell is involved in balance?
HAIR CELL with KINOCILIUM
