Lab 3 Flashcards
DNA model Mitosis models Iden fy the phases of mitosis Know the number of chromosomes in gametes and soma c cells
In the DNA model what is the railing?
Phosphate.
In the DNA model, what are the spindles (thing that attaches to the railing)?
Sugar, specifically deoxyribose.
In the DNA model, what are the treads (steps)?
Nitrogenous bases (Adenine [A], Thymine [T], Guanine [G],and Cytosine [C].
What happens during Interphase?
The cell grows and replicates its DNA in preparation for cell division.
What occurs during early Prophase?
The nuclear envolope remains intact, chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, and centromeres begin moving to oppsite poles of the cell.
What occurs during late Prophase?
The nuclear envolope starts to break down, becoming fragmented and spindle fibers begin to interact with chromosomes.
What happens during prometaphase?
The nuclear envolope is completely dissasembled, allowing the spindle fibers to attach to the kinetochores of the chromsome.
What happens during metaphase?
Chromosomes align along the metaphase plate, and spindle fibers attach to their centromeres.
What happens during anaphase?
Sister chromatids separate and are pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell by spindle fibers.
What occurs during telophase?
In telophase, the chromosomes are actually at the opposite ends and new nuclei are forming on each side to make two new cells.
What is cytokinesis?
Responsible for the final separation into two cells by splitting the cytoplasm which completes the PMAT mitosis stages.
How many chromosomes are found in gametes?
23 chromosomes (haploid number).
How many chromosomes are found in somatic cells?
46 chromosomes (diploid number).
What is the order of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase (PMAT).
